Dr. Mohammad Mosaddegh has been one of the most influential and popular political figures in Iran for a century (i.e., one hundred years). He was the Prime Minister of Iran from 1951 to 1953 and he spoke fluent Persian language, the official language of Iran, French and English. If you want to learn Persian (also called Farsi) and understand more about Iranian culture and history, you should know about him and his achievements. He challenged the first King of the Pahlavi dynasty, i.e. Reza Shah, and confronted his son, Mohammad Reza Shah, which led to his downfall and imprisonment. The main reason for his popularity is his role in nationalizing Iran’s oil industry, which was previously controlled by foreign powers. He was a champion of democracy and sovereignty for the Iranian people. Let’s see who he was, what he did for Iranians, and what happened to him at the end.
Mohammad Mosaddegh was a lawyer, professor, author, governor, parliament member, finance minister, and democratically elected prime minister of Iran. He was born on 16 June 1882 in Tehran and died on 5 March 1967 in the same city. Mosaddegh was a champion of democracy and sovereignty for the Iranian people and he is best known for his role in nationalizing Iran’s oil industry, which was previously controlled by foreign powers. He also enacted social reforms and fought against corruption and foreign interference. However, his government was overthrown in a British-American coup d’état in 1953, aided by the intelligence agencies of the United Kingdom (MI6) and the United States (CIA), led by Kermit Roosevelt Jr. He was arrested and tried as a traitor in a military tribunal court and spent the rest of his life under house arrest. He is widely regarded as a national hero and a symbol of resistance against imperialism in Iran and the world.
