Subject Endings are an important part of Persian grammar. They are words that attach to verbs and show who or what is doing the action. For example, in English, we add “-s” to the verb to show that the subject is a third-person singular noun or pronoun. Like “he”, “she”, or “it”. In Persian, endings are more complex. They can show not only the person and number of the subject but also the tense and mood of the verb.
One of the benefits of using subject endings is that you can drop the subject pronoun from the sentence and still understand who or what is the subject. This makes Persian a PRODROP language, which means that it can omit pronouns when they are not needed. For example, in Persian, you can say “خوندم” (khundam) “I read” or “I have read”, without using the word “من” (man), “I”. The ending “-am” shows that the verb is in the first person singular past tense or present perfect tense.
In this lesson, you will learn how to use endings in Persian. You will also learnd how they change depending on the person, number, tense, and mood of the verb. Other topics in this lesson are: how to omit pronouns when they are not necessary and how to use them when you want to emphasize or contrast the subject. This will help you speak more fluently and naturally in Persian.
